Severe flooding in eastern and central Europe has claimed at least 16 lives. Over the weekend, heavy rainfall led to significant flooding in parts of Romania, Poland, and the Czech Republic, causing widespread damage, including collapsed bridges, destroyed homes, and damaged vehicles.
In southwestern Poland, the number of fatalities has risen to five. The body of a surgeon returning from hospital duty was discovered in Nysa on Monday morning, according to firefighters. Earlier, the bodies of two women and two men had been recovered from the same region.
The Czech Republic has reported at least three deaths, with seven individuals still missing. In Romania, the floods have claimed seven lives, and one person has died in Austria.
Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has declared a state of natural disaster in the affected areas to aid evacuation and rescue efforts and to speed up financial assistance for those impacted. Many cities in Poland are also organizing food drives for the flood-affected regions.
