Angels Star Mike Trout Open to Changing Positions to Preserve Health

Los Angeles Angels standout and franchise cornerstone Mike Trout has indicated he’s open to moving away from center field, possibly shifting to a corner outfield spot or designated hitter (DH) role in an effort to stay healthy.

Speaking on Monday, Trout addressed the idea of a position change:

“I think everything’s on the table. My ultimate goal is to be in the lineup, both in the field and at the plate, every day. Whether that means moving to a corner position or DHing more, I’ll let the front office figure out the best plan. Given what’s happened over the past few years, I’m definitely open to exploring all options that will keep me on the field.”

Trout is sidelined for the rest of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. This is just the latest in a series of injuries for the three-time American League MVP, which have significantly impacted his playing time in recent years. Here’s a look at the number of games Trout has managed over the past four seasons:

  • 2021: 36 games
  • 2022: 119 games
  • 2023: 82 games
  • 2024: 29 games

At 33 years old, with a contract that runs through 2030, a less demanding role in the field might be necessary to help maintain his health. Trout has spent his entire 14-year career primarily in center field, but continuing to play such a demanding position in his mid-thirties, especially with his history of soft-tissue injuries, poses a significant risk.

Despite his injury struggles, Trout has shown he can still produce at the plate. In 2024, despite limited appearances, he hit 10 home runs and posted an impressive OPS+ of 138 over 29 games. A move to a corner outfield spot or increased time as a DH could help ensure he’s in the lineup more consistently moving forward.
