The White House has condemned Elon Musk as “irresponsible” following a controversial social media post where he suggested that no one was attempting to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk shared the remark on his X platform, accompanied by a thinking emoji, but later removed the post, claiming it was meant as a joke.
This comment emerged in the wake of an attempted assassination of Donald Trump on Sunday, which came after a previous attempt on his life during a rally in July.
In response, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates issued a statement criticizing Musk’s comments: “Violence should be condemned, not trivialized or joked about. This kind of rhetoric is irresponsible.”
Musk, known for his support of Trump, initially defended his comment before deleting it on Monday. He later remarked, “One lesson I’ve learned is that just because something gets a laugh in a private setting doesn’t mean it will be well-received when posted publicly.”
Musk’s support for Trump is well-documented, including a recent interview with the former president on X. His deleted post came amidst ongoing investigations into the incident at Trump’s Florida golf course, where Secret Service agents fired after spotting a rifle through the bushes.
